About Vokes of Adare![]() Vokes was started by Henry's father, Harry Vokes.
Born in 1902, Harry attended St Nicholas National School in Adare. Walking to school in hob nail boots or bare foot, he started working as a trainee shop assistant in Hanrahans grocery and hardware shop.
In the early 1930's, Harrys father, Simon helped Harry to buy the Hanrahans business and Harry's 2 sisters helped him to run the shop at this time.
A brief history of the Vokes Gift Shop family association with Adare, Co. Limerick
Harry had a great intrest in greyhounds especially coursing. He sucesfully bred greyhounds.
The greyhounds disappeared in April 1950 when Harry wed local girl Edith Millar. Together they developed the business into grocery/hardware and a drapery shop.
In Oct 1953 Henry was born.
The shop served the local community very well. With money scarce and times not as good as the are now, buying on tick (credit) was widely practised, especially by the farming community. Payment was made after the harvest and Christmas time.
Farmers would offset their liabilites with the sale of their produce/vegetables, eggs, poultry etc.
One day a week a lorry came from Kantoher creamery to purchase hens and turkeys from the local farmers in the yard behind the shop. In 1960 the opportunity arose to buy the the shop/mill known as Black Abbey Co. This they did and after revamping and modernizing they now had 2 grocery /hardware shops and drapery shop.
In the 1970s the 2 grocery/hardware shops were amalgated and a modern drapery shop opened in the origional business premises.
In 1985 Henry married Hazel Dann, a Tipperary woman.
In 1997 the existing shop, stores and outoffices were totally demolished.
A modern purpose built premises was erected, selling paints, D I Y, gardening, and gifts.
With the increase in leisure time and visitor numbers, the gift shop and homeware section have become a very important part of our business. |
